LOSS OF EYESIGHT – the most feared loss of all the five senses – is also the most
devastating because more than 80 percent of the information one takes in from the
world is visual. New studies show that two of the most common reasons for loss of
sight, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, can be stopped or improved
with nutrition and supplements.
Studies Prove Vision Power Ingredients Effective
More than 20 million Americans have cataracts, the filmy deposits that lead to
blindness. Typically, surgery is the only answer for cataracts. Recently published
results of an Italian study reveal that taking bilberry and vitamin E can prevent
the progression of cataracts up to 97 percent of the time. Bilberry has been known
for more than 60 years as an effective remedy for poor night vision. Now, it also
has proven effective in relieving tired eyes because it strengthens capillaries in
the eyes and improves circulation.*
Bilberry is the world’s most popular herb for eyesight improvement
Legend holds that during WWII, British Royal Air Force bomber crews reported
improved night vision from eating bilberry jam, allowing them to better see their
targets and increase their accuracy. These reports led to laboratory and clinical
research on the effects of bilberry fruit extracts on the eyes and the entire
vascular system. Researchers concluded that the most effective medicinal use for
bilberry extract was for improving micro-circulation, which benefits the capillaries
of the eyes.*
A study published in January in the journal, “Archives of Ophthalmology,” reveals
that individuals whose diets are high in lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E have a
reduced risk of developing cataracts. Moreover, the same study showed improved
intake of lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants found in yellow or dark, leafy
vegetables, has been linked to a lower risk of another common eye
disease — age-related macular degeneration.*
Study information came from the Women’s Health Study that utilized data from
35,551 women, ages 45 years and older, and followed them for an average of 10 years.
Women whose intake of lutein and zeaxanthin was in the top one-fifth of participants
experienced an 18 percent lower risk of developing cataracts than women whose intake
was in the bottom fifth. When vitamin E was examined, those whose intake was in the
top one-fifth had a 14 percent reduction in risk compared with women whose intake
was lowest.*
Lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E are believed to help protect against cataracts
by reducing the formation of damaging free radicals. The authors concluded the data
indicate that higher intakes of lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E are associated with
decreased risk of cataract and age-related macular degeneration. *
